The Bowspring is a curvy shape of readiness, which brings lightness and openness to any position. In this weekend workshop, students will learn how to make any movement or common posture like standing, sitting, or walking, fluid and dynamically powerful for optimal functionality and radiant health.
The Bowspring is a universal postural template that optimizes any movement — yoga, athletics, or simply moving around in our daily life—for greater lightness, agility, ease, and power. This dynamic alignment method is also highly therapeutic for any musculo-skeletal issues including lower back problems, hip pain, knee or shoulder injuries.
This workshop is composed of 5 classes that progressively lead students of all levels though the most basic forms and movements of this dynamic postural method.
In each class, students will be taught katas – set sequences of simple, repeated movements which will unveil their unconscious postural patterns. With new awareness of our habitual body language through an increased postural presence, we can bring increasing balance to our mind-health health. With this new postural technology, we gain the freedom to choose a healthier, more positive body language that we communicate not only to others, but to the deepest part of ourselves.
Students will learn about the 10 universal postural tendencies which unconsciously draw us toward a closed posture throughout our normal day. The Bowspring method integrates a mindfulness training with the cultivation of compassion and accountability to help us create our own individual destiny. In this weekend, you can gain a transformative shift in self-knowing, which can reveal a path toward harmony and long-term health. The Bowspring is movement medicine which cleanses fear and bolsters courage.
Desi and John will help each student learn the Bowspring considering everyone’s unique alignment and particular limitations. The most basic elemental forms of the Bowspring system will be presented along with dynamic postures within the Level 1 Syllabus.

Friday night – Shining the Power of Radiant Heart
The Bowspring is a universal postural template that optimizes any movement — yoga, athletics, or simply moving around in our daily life—for greater lightness, agility, ease, and power. The primary alignment of the Bowspring is Radiant Heart, which is an expansion of the ribcage and opening of the heart in all directions. This inner expansion of a positive attitude for life brings a lightness to all poses. Specific alignment of the fingers and hands in the Bowspring will also be covered in this introductory class to help better open the shoulders in any pose, and to give therapy for the elbows and wrists. Radiant Heart shines an optimistic willpower to improve one’s health and happiness.
Saturday morning – Building a Superior Posterior
The Bowspring alignment is outstanding for building up the glutes, and giving a spring-loaded power to the hips. With mounding glutes you can mightily root down into the Earth in order to maximize extension and length in the spine. Our roots are our hips, legs and feet, which are actively engaged in all Bowspring dynamic poses. With strong, uplifted glutes we can powerfully root down to walk, run, jump or move around during our day with greater lightness and ease.
Saturday afternoon – Opening the Wings of Your Heart
The Bowspring method integrates all the main parts of the body—ribcage (Heart), shoulders, arms, and hands (Wings), hips, legs, and feet (Roots), waist and neck (Spools), and head (Crown)—into a unified dynamic posture for optimal strength, lightness, ease of movement. The focus of this afternoon session is on bringing balance and synergy to our Wings – shoulders, arms, and hands. By connecting the sensitivity of our fingertips and strength at the mounds of our palm up our arms into our shoulders, we can more effectively expand our ribcage and create lightness and power in every pose.
Sunday morning – Bowspring Slow Flow
All Bowspring poses interconnect through specific, mindful sequences of movements and actions. Once the student learns the elemental forms of the Bowspring, then the poses can be meld together in choreographed flowing sequences like a dance. This session will teach basic katas or slow mindful flows of the Bowspring method that students of any level can practice regularly at home. The session will also increase more intermediate poses including one-legged balancing standing poses, one-armed balancing poses, and handstands. (Early sessions on Friday or Saturday are prerequisites for this session.)
- Sunday afternoon – Therapeutics for 10 Key Areas of the Body
The Bowspring can be therapeutically applied for a wide range of musculo-skeletal injuries or chronic pains including:
- Feet – Bunions and plantar fasciitis
- Knees – tendonitis, ligament and cartilage injury
- Hips – cartilage degeneration
- Lower Back – Sacro-iliac pain, lumbar disk injury
- Shoulders – rotator cuff injury, chronic pain
- Elbows – tendonitis
- Hands – arthritis
- Neck – chronic pain
- Jaw – grinding of teeth
- Head – chronic headaches
Each student will learn to how to become aware of and to consciously change old postural habits, which are at the root of chronic alignment issues and physical pains.
